On the third day of the competitions at the World Fencing Championships in Milan, the two Greeks in the men’s epee and two of the four Greek women in the women’s epee took their place on the tracks of the “Allianz Arena”. In the men’s sword exercise, Nikos Kontochristopoulos (AOX Aegaleo) and Artemios Tzovanis (AOX Aegaleo) scored two wins and four losses in the pool phase and qualified for the 128 board.
Tzovanis was unable to overcome the obstacle of the Serbian Veliko Tsuk, from whom he was defeated 15-10, while Kontochristopoulos was disqualified by Chi Ka Yeung from Hong Kong with the same score. The two athletes ranked 118th and 128th respectively among 177 fencers.
In women’s saber, Claire Benou recorded one win and four losses in the pool stage and failed to advance to the next round. She finished her presence with the 106th place in the event.
Marina Paizi scored three wins and two losses in the pools and went directly to the “knock outs” of the round of “64”. In the crucial match for entry to the main draw, she managed to beat Egypt’s Nada Hafez 15-5 and renewed her date on the track for next Thursday. There, she will face American Elizabeth Tartakovsky (FIE No11).
Paizi qualifies for the fourth time in the main table of “64” after 2010 (Paris, 50th), 2011 (Catania, 40th) and 2015 (Moscow, 48th).
