by

Dimitris Antonatos won the first medal for the Greek “colors” at the European Under-20 Athletics Championships held in Jerusalem. The 17-year-old champion climbed to the third step of the podium in the shot put with a performance of 19.31m, which he scored in his sixth and final attempt. This performance is a new personal record for Antonatos, who had marked 19.30 meters in the qualifier. It is worth noting that the young thrower was in fifth place in the final until his fifth attempt, but he managed to take the medal with his last throw. Antonatos throws in the final were 18.41m, 18.99m, 18.25m, 18.41m, void and 19.31m. The gold medal was won by the German Lasse Schultz with a throw of 20.21 meters, while the silver went to his compatriot, Lucas Sober, with a performance of 19.76 meters.

Meanwhile, Yiannis Gartsios qualified for the triple jump final. The 17-year-old jumper got the “ticket” for tomorrow’s (10/8, 19:35) final, thanks to his third and last attempt, with which he “landed” at 15.93 meters. This was the second-best jump of the qualifier, and would have been a new personal best (Garcios currently has a personal best of 15.85m) if the wind had been within the permitted limits (2.3). His first jump was 13.75 meters and his second 15.06 meters and it was not enough to qualify him for the final.

The “curtain” of the 3rd day of the European opened with the participation of Anastasia Antonopoulou in the final of the 10 km walk. The 19-year-old ran a good race and finished her bid in eighth place in the final with a time of 48.47, which is close to her own record this year (48.29).

Gerasimos Kampitsis took 14th place in the overall 200 meters, after his participation in the semi-final. There the Greek sprinter was seventh in the second semi-final series with a performance of 21.70.

Myrto Valaha participated in the direct final of the 3000 meters, where she finished her effort in 16th place with a performance of 10:40.20.

Finally, in the discus qualifier, Maria Alekseeva had a best throw of 43.36 meters, a performance she achieved in her third attempt, and took 19th place overall.
