Apollon Smyrnis announced Roland Gomes

by

Roland Gomes is the new coach of Apollon Smyrna. The management of the “light brigade” announced the recruitment of the former international Costa Rican striker of OFI for the next year.

The 48-year-old was Luis Suarez’s assistant on the bench for his country’s national team at the World Cup in Qatar, while last season he sat on the bench for San Lucia in Guatemala.

In detail, the announcement:

“Roland Gomes, the coach who just a few months ago was sitting on the bench of the Costa Rica national team, as Luis Suarez’s partner in the Qatar World Cup, will be the new ‘boss’ of Apollo.

The management of the Athenian team, in the context of the reorganization of Apollon, managed to convince the well-known among the Greek sports fans from his time at OFI, Gomes, to star in the new beginning of the ‘light brigade’.

Roland Gomes, knowing the ‘heavy’ name of Apollon and, recognizing the management’s intentions and trust in him, agreed to come to Athens, despite the fact that Apollon will be forced to compete in the 3rd National League this year.

Gomes’ career as a footballer is, of course, amazing and in Costa Rica he is already a ‘myth’. With two appearances in World Cups, (2002 Korea, 2006 Germany), having scored 2 goals!!!, one in the match against Ronaldo’s then huge Brazil (‘phenomenon’) and one against China, having won five championships and a Central American Champions League and participating in the World Club Championship, no more words are needed.

He started his coaching career 14 years ago and at the ripe old age of 48 he wanted to return to our country, where he had written his own history with the OFI jersey.

The arrival of Gomes to Apollon of the 3rd National Team now shows the management’s goals and dreams for how it imagines this historic team. At the same time, it is also a call to the WHOLE Apollonist world, all over the world, to stand next to our team that will try to give back its ethos, its love to the youth and to football and to honor its very ‘heavy’ history”.
