Carlitos’ interview with Marianna Karadima in detail:
We welcome you back to Greece. Your excitement for your return is obvious
“I feel very happy to be back. Greece is part of my career and I have spent some time here. I really like this country and the people.”
You are now at a different club this season. Did you settle into your new team and how were your new teammates welcoming you?
“I had a very warm welcome from everyone when I came. From my teammates, the fans, the coach, from everyone. All of this was important to me and I’m happy to be here.”
-Last year you had a very good year with Legia Warsaw, winning the Championship. What are your hopes and goals for the new year in the Lamia team?
“I came here because the club president wants to change the club. They want to take a step forward and take the team to a higher level. That’s what I came for. My expectations for this year are to help as much as I can to make it go as high as possible. I want to repay the love I received by coming here.”
– Let’s go back a little… to Panathinaikos. It is a fact that your name has been associated with the shamrock.
“I have very fond memories of Panathinaikos. We won the Cup, when the team had not won a title for a long time. During the years I was at Panathinaikos, the club had started to change for the better. So I feel part of this change too. Also my daughters were born while I was in the greens. I will always respect the chairman, the fans and everyone in the team! My feelings don’t change because I’m at a different club. Of course I respect my team, Lamia and I will fight for it, but Panathinaikos will always be in my heart”!
-Have you kept in touch with your old teammates?
“I have kept in touch with several children. I can’t say three or four, because there are many people with whom I have contact.”
-What do you miss most about Greece?
“I really missed the love of the people here, the sun, the coffee (laughs). I liked it in Poland too, of course. It is a very beautiful country. In Greece, however, it is different”!
-You have been away from your homeland, Spain, for several years. Would you ever like to go back and play for your country’s team?
“This year before I came here I had this opportunity. I had two proposals from Spain. But in the end I weighed it up and when I spoke with the President of Lamia, he showed me that he wants to do something strong and different. I like what the people in the team want to achieve and that’s why I decided to come here.”
-You are 33 years old… Are you thinking about the continuation of your career?
“I am in a phase where my physical condition is very good and my mind is clear. Even when the time comes for me to stop playing I will probably continue to work in the field of football. I know a lot of things and a lot of people in this area.”
-You are the father of two little girls and you want to be by their side no matter what they do. Although small, watching their dad play, have they started playing with the ball?
“They both kick the ball with the left! And Victoria and Alma. It is incredible! That might mean they might have some ability, (laughs). I don’t know if they will be involved in football in the future, because they are still very young, but whatever they want to do, I will support them.”
