The news of Roberto Mancini’s resignation from the Italian national team, just ten months before Euro 2024, exploded like a “bombshell” a few 24 hours ago.
The experienced technician in his interview with “Reppublica” referred to the reasons that led him to the decision to end his term on the “squadra azzura” bench, unleashing “fire” at the president of the Italian federation, Gabriel Gravina.
In detail what he said:
“I did nothing to be slaughtered like this. I just resigned and said it’s my choice.
I explained to Gravina these months I needed support and calm, he didn’t offer it and I resigned. Should I have done it earlier? Maybe. But I left the national team 25 days, not three before the next game.
Gravina was trying to bring radical changes to my staff. I told him that at best he could add a couple of new faces, but he couldn’t take away two existing members of an already successful ensemble. If anyone had to do it, it would be me who decides on any change in my staff.
Gravina has been seeing things very differently from me lately. They tear me apart just for a decision. I was just waiting for a signal from the president, he could have helped me if he wanted to but he didn’t. He didn’t want me to stay, it’s a situation that lasted months. But Gravina will always be remembered as the president who won the Euros, not for the mistakes he made.”
