The first and decisive step for qualifying for the Champions League playoffs was taken by AEK in “Maksimir”, leaving the headquarters of Dinamo Zagreb with the great double (1-2) which even came with a twist.
The Croatian coach, Igor Bischanexpressed at the press conference his disappointment with the result, stressing that his team was good for an hour of the match, while after suffered subsidence. However, he appeared optimistic about the rematch, saying that despite it unwelcoming atmosphere who will meet Athens, he and his players will fight for qualification.
Igor Bischan’s statements in detail:
“We are disappointed. We were good for about an hour until AEK’s first goal, then we had a few chances, but when we started to make changes, we had a drop in performance. We played bravely and with combinations, we had a chance at the end of the first half and who knows how it would have ended if we made it 2-0 but football is played for 90 minutes. The experienced players of AEK waited for their moment and we could have conceded more goals. After the goal we lost our rhythm and didn’t get back into the game, even though we had a lot of chances in the second half, but it wasn’t at the level of the first.
You have to have quality and width to maintain the level of competition against a team like AEK. It is clear that the field there will be fiery, hot and very difficult. It is a stadium that is very supportive and welcoming, it will be a war in a hostile environment, but we will fight. This can be used as a motivation by us. They haven’t lost at home for a long time and that says everything about how much their home ground means to them but we will try to win.”
