Sakkari burst into tears: “I am embarrassing myself, my people and all Greeks”

by

Maria Sakkari burst into tears at the press conference after her early disqualification from the US Open.

The great Greek tennis player did not hide her disappointment and bowed in front of the journalists, as her appearance at the last Grand Slam of the season ended in a very bad way.

In statements she then made to Eurosport, she spoke harshly about her effort, mentioning among other things that she feels she has embarrassed herself and all Greeks.

I think my level was below zero, it’s too bad at the level I’m at to compete like this, it hurts a lot and okay it’s too hard to deal with all this right now, it’s very painful.

The new year sounds a long way off to me. The question is what I will do from now on, from tomorrow itself. Being able to take a break and get my mind and thinking in a row is a script. The other scenario is to just keep going and try my best this year. To play two or three more tournaments and whatever happens.

It’s very fresh right now what’s right or what I want to do, it’s also the feelings now of the fight. There are these two scenarios in my mind and it’s very frustrating. I feel that I have disgraced myself, I have disgraced my people, that I have disgraced all Greeks“, were her words.
