The bad weather “Elpis” and the heavy snowfall caused damage to the basketball court “Argyris Koronaios”, which is no longer functional, according to its announcement Panionios Amateur.
Specifically, part of the tent that covered it collapsed resulting in the entrapment of the entire infrastructure – floodlights and electrical infrastructure.
Analytically:
The heavy snowfall of the previous days had as a consequence to cause serious damage on Monday night at the basketball court “Argyris Koronaios”, to the extent that it is no longer functional. The Board of Directors of the Panionios Gymnastics Association wishes to inform its athletes, members and fans that from the next day, on the one hand it is in search of temporary solutions by finding alternative places in the area for training, on the other hand it launches a series of actions with the ultimate goal of restoring the stadium to a state of functionality. Of course, these actions will continue until the opportunity is given to return to the place where hundreds of children from Nea Smyrni and the southern suburbs play sports.
Below is a letter sent by our Association to all relevant bodies, requesting their contribution to address the problem.
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
On the night of the 24th to the 25th of January 2022, after the severe weather phenomena that hit the area of Nea Smyrni (snowstorms and strong wind), the covered basketball court of Panionios “Argyris Koronaios” was completely destroyed. The construction that supported the roof of the stadium collapsed and collapsed, dragging along the entire infrastructure (floodlights, electrical infrastructure, awning), which made it non-functional.
This project was funded exclusively by the Association’s resources and donations and was one of the most important pillars of the academies, housing training and sports for more than 400 children of our municipality, but also hosting tournaments and competitions of our departments. In fact, it is a place that hosted children from schools or colleges for their exercise.
The project was constructed in 2010 by the German company Eschenbach Zeltbau GmbH and brought quality certification from TUV HELLAS from 27/8/2010.
At the moment, the damaged infrastructure is barely supported on the old pillars and part of the refreshment building, while part of it stands dangerously on the fence of the space. The risk to passing workers and athletes is very high, as well as the possibility of the columns and old stakes receding more, which if it happens, will result in even greater damage to the space.
As a first step, we made sure to block access to the site and cut off the electricity supply to avoid an accident. It is, however, an urgent need to launch the dismantling and collection of damaged materials, but also to repair the damage to the electrical installation, the baskets and the fencing.
Because of this disaster, the blow to our Club Basketball academies is truly incalculable and adds to a number of problems that have already accumulated over the past two years as a result of the pandemic.
With this letter, we attach photographic material and the TUV certificate.
Also, below is a brief list of restoration projects that need to be done:
Dismantling and collection of damaged materials
-Repair of damages in the field
-Placement of Basketballs
Installation of Taraflex sports floor
-Restoration of the electrical installation
-Restoration of the fence and the door of the stadium
-Restoration of the basketball court housing with construction of new infrastructure
Dear Ladies and Gentlemen,
In a great and historically important centenary for our Municipality and, in particular, for the Panionios Gymnastics Association, which was forced to become a refugee a hundred years ago, leaving Smyrna and settling in Athens, the need to show in practice is more urgent than ever. your interest and your support to the largest Athletic Association of our Municipality, but also to one of the most important Sports Schools of Hellenism, supporting directly and substantially the restoration projects from the disaster.
Panionios G.S. Σμύρνης
