A sharp landing and a 3-0 defeat for the National Team in the Netherlands

Subjugated to Holland the National. Its virtually unconditional delivery Greece to the “oranie” and defeat 3-0 in Eindhoven as part of the 4th matchday of the 2nd group of the qualifying phase of Euro 2024.

A half-time showdown took place at the “Philips Stadion”, with the blue and white team having a hard time in the first, in which everything was decided. In the minds of the coaches:

The Netherlands lined up with a system 3-4-3. Flecken was under the posts, with Hertruida, Van Dijk and Ake forming the trio in central defence. Dumfries, De Roan, De Jong and Blind in the centre, while Hakpo and Simmons were on the wings, with Weghorst leading the attack.

With 4-3-3 Gustavo Poget lined up our national team. Vlachodimos defended our goal, Rota, Retsos, Hatzidiakos and Tsimikas were the four in defense. Siopis had Kourbelis on his side, with Bakaseta having a playmaker role and Masoura-Mandalos being on the “wings”, while Pavlidis was at the top.

The match

The national team had a very difficult mission and at the beginning they pressed high to make it difficult for the home team to move. As expected, the Netherlands had possession of the ball and the initiative of the movements, with Greece playing tighter, keeping a waiting attitude. Without, however, being under too much pressure, the period passed until 1-0 for the National Team and whatever phase the home team had came from a static phase. The “Oranie” threatened twice and both through corners, but the third turned out to be… medicinalwith Blind executing, Dumfries leaping high to head a pass to De Rouenwho from a firing position defeated Vlachodemos in 17′. In between, the blue and white team had the first good moment, with the ball laying to Rota on the edge of the large area after Tsimika’s cross, but it was very off target.

Retsos spared us in the 22nd minute from the worst after his turn Dumfries, while in the 29th minute, Vlachodimos prevented the 2-0, making an impressive save on Simmons’ shot against Hadzidiakos. One minute after the first good phase of the national team, with Bakaseta crossing from the left and Kourbelis making a deflected header. The… looming 3-0 of the hosts was made in the 39th minute, when Hakpo went vertically, pierced the Greek defense, finding Dumfries who with a nice cross found the Weghorst which this time found a net, making it 3-0 with a header.

THE National presented two faces in the match, but the truth is that he could have done more damage in the final stretch of the first part. Thus, Greece went into halftime with three goals behind for the first time since 2019 (3-0 from Italy in OAKA). However, Gustavo Poget decided not to make any changes upon returning from hiatus and this is remarkable, not to say completely misplaced.

The second half was largely a chore for both teams. The Dutch people the changes they made took some time to digest, but the key factor was that they didn’t have the same momentum. From then on, the game broke down completely, with the two coaches making a bunch of changes and tests, keeping in mind their next obligations, as a result of which the match somewhat resembled a friendly. The Netherlands looked for a fourth goal in the final stretch, without stepping on the gas, however, with Ryders shooting in the 82nd minute and Vlahodemos blocking. Until the final whistle, nothing changed in the match and the efforts of both teams were sealed with 3-0 in favor of the Dutch.

MVP: Undoubtedly Dumfries was the man of the match. He set up all three of Holland’s goals, displaying his quality on the grass, which he “ploughed” from the right side. A very good game was also played by Simmons, who looked… uncatchable at times.

Whistle: Special talk about arbitration cannot be done. The only phase that was called into question was at 2-0, but through technology it turned out that Hakpo was not exposed.
