The Balkanionikes returned to Athens

The sportsmen and women of our national table tennis teams returned from Bulgaria on Thursday afternoon 07/09, clearly satisfied with the overall competitive presence and the achievements in the Balkan men’s-women’s championship. In their baggage they had the prizes for the first place in the men’s team and the 3rd place in the men’s doubles (with George and Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos), but they also had the… psychological boost of the remarkable performances in a great and historic event. After two flights, the internationals arrived around 5pm in Athens and, apart from some of their own people, they were warmly welcomed by the president of E.F.O.E.P.A. Kostas Papageorgiou. The head of the federation’s administration and national teams’ administrator congratulated one by one the sportsmen and women who competed in Albena, as well as the other members of the delegation, and wished them even higher honors in the future. WEB TV of E.F.O.E.P.A. was also at the airport. and elicited statements, which were quickly posted on the federation’s YouTube channel.

The Greek colors were represented in the Balkan championship by the athletes Tasos Riniotis, Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos, George Konstantinopoulos, Gerasimos Hatzilygeroudis, Nikos Antoniadis, the gymnasts Malamatenia Papadimitriou, Aliki Kioufi, Dimitra-Thomais Tsekouras, Ioanna Gerasimatou, the federal the coaches Giorgos Karytsas, Sotiris Zikos and others representative of the board of directors of E.F.O.E.P.A. the special secretary and public relations manager Xenia Stathis. The protagonists of the men’s national team spoke enthusiastically about winning the Balkan title, the first for Greece in the team after 30 years (the sick Hatzilygeroudis was unable to make statements). Sotiris Zikos stood on the podium after last year’s bronze medal in the event, where he was also the responsible coach.

On behalf of the women’s national team, Aliki Kioufi and Ioanna Gerasimatou commented on the 5th place in the team, the placings in places 5-8 and the overall effort. Also, Kostas Papageorgiou pointed out the many positive conclusions that derive from the successes in Albena, while Xenia Stathis referred to the conference of the Balkan Union, where EFOEPA’s nominations were submitted for taking over two Balkan championships in 2024. The national member federations they have already voted for the venues, the men’s-women’s Balkan was given to Bosnia/Herzegovina and the youth Balkan to Bulgaria (in Albena).

However, E.F.O.E.P.A. made it known that she maintains her desire to take over the two events (remember the first one for Salamina and the second one for Orestiada) and requests them for 2025. As Xenia Stathis pointed out, a positive climate has already been created and members of the management of the BTTU they said that one of the two competitions will definitely be held in Greece.
