Mythical Germany sent… a lot of Team USA to its “home”!
In a game that will be remembered for years and written in “gold” and capital letters on his books World CupGory Hebert’s team prevailed with the impressive 113-111 of the USA at the “Mall Of Asia Arena” in Manila, thus taking for first time in its history the ticket for the grand final of the event!
Playing to the tempo and philosophy of the Americans, the Germans were stunning throughout the match and with amazing hit rates (58% from the field, 43% from the three-point range) showed their “teeth” in the United States of America, thus closing date with Serbia in the final of Mundobasket (10/09)!
Exciting for the winners were Franz Wagner (22 p., 5 p.), Andreas Obst (24p., 6as., 4/8tr.) and Daniel Tice (21p., 7r.), with Dennis Schroeder to score a crucial three-pointer in the finale of the match, finishing the game with 17 points and 9 assists.
For Team USA who for second consecutive event is left out of the final, stood out Edwards and Reeves with 23 and 21 points respectively.
The match:
With Brunson, Hart, Edwards, Bridges and Jackson J. the game started Team USAwith the Germany to line up with the Schroeders, Fr. Wagner, Obst, Voigmann and Tice. From the very beginning of the match, the game had frenetic pace, with the “punchers” “beating” Team USA at their own game! With Franz Wagner and Obst to lead the attack, Germany led with 17-11 at 4′!
In fact, a little later, Schroeder’s three-pointer sent the difference for the first time at +10 (15-25)before Edwards, Bridges and Reeves “answered” for the US, reducing to 33-31 for the first quarter.
The frenetic pace continued in the second period, with both teams finishing the first half with amazing percentages (59% for USA, 56% for Germany)! With consecutive three-pointers of Bridgesand Edwardsthe Americans escaped for the first time with 5 points in the match (48-43 at 15′). The reaction of the Germans was immediate, with Schroeder, Fr. Wagner and Tice to make a breakthrough and with a quick 9-0 run to take the lead again (53-57 at 18)!
Steve Kerr’s team responded with the same “coin” and with an unanswered 6-0 run by Anthony Edwards they went ahead 60-57, with Theis shaping 60-59 at halftime.
The pace was just as frantic in the second half, with Germany entering the third quarter with… broken brakes! With Gordy Hebert’s zone defense working well to lock down the Americans to a point, Franz Wagner and Daniel Theiss got their “gun” sending their team to +6 for the 70-64 at 23′!
Having the momentum and with the psychology at the height, the unlikely entered the equation of the match tonight, Andreas Obstshooting the difference up to +10 (82-92), with Bridges and Schroeder shaping the 94-84 of the period!
In the fourth and final period, Germany kept the lead going at +12 (94-106) at 35′. Edwards and Reeves led the US counterattack, down to a point (107-108) at 1:35′ before the finale, making the match a thriller. In the end, a huge three-pointer from him Obst and then a two-pointer of his Shredder it was enough for Germany to go at +6 (107-113)thus reaching the historic pink match sheet with the final 113-111!
