Flag submission for the US Women’s National Team. THE Megan Rapinoe last played for the national team in the 2-0 win over South Africa in Chicago.
The 38-year-old Olympic medalist and two-time world champion had an assist from a corner and was substituted in the 54th minute in shock, completing an international career with 203 appearances and 63 goals in just over 17 years.
The iconic attacking midfielder, a leading figure in world women’s football, has also stood out off the field for her activist work in favor of the rights of the LGBT+ community. Rapinoe will retire for good in November, with the end of the United States league regular season, where she plays with the OL Reign.
Rapinoe won the Olympic tournament with the United States at the 2012 London Games and then the 2015 and 2019 World Cups.
“I’m grateful to have been able to play for so long with so many incredible players and to have success on and off the court“, commented the famous American visibly moved.
“What we did off the field had a much bigger impact” from our success in football, Rapinoe pointed out and added: “I think we’ve played a role in raising awareness in sports, and especially women’s sports, but also issues like gay rights, racial justice, and transgender rights.».
