The match

Panathinaikos started with Balcherovski, Hernangometh, Grigonis, Grant and Vildosa, while Olympiacos started with Milutinov, Peters, Papanikolaou, Kanan and Walkap. With a very good pace and more willingness to shoot from the perimeter, the two teams entered the derby, with the score tied (8-8) in the first four minutes. With a mini outburst by Walkup, the “red and white” escaped to +4 (10-14), with Balcherovski reacting and bringing the match to a point (15-16), in the 6th minute. In the following minutes, the two “eternals” hit more through the racket. On the one hand, the Piraeus relied on Milutinov, while on the other hand the “greens” took offensive rebounds and with Hernangometh they closed the first period back to the point (22-23).

One you and one mine were the first minutes of the second period with Williams-Goss keeping Olympiakos at first, but Lesor and Slouka sending Panathinaikos to +3 (30-27), at 13′. Then, the “greens” went to the bonus shots very early and taking advantage of the mistakes of the “red and whites”, led by Sluka, escaped to +10 (39-29), which Hernangomet maintained (43-33), until the 18′. In the final two minutes, both missed and the only thing that changed was a 3-pointer by Kanan that made it 43-36 in the first half.

With Hernangometh and Slouka, Panathinaikos maintained its safety distance (48-39) at the beginning of the second half. Then, Olympiacos made repeated defenses and, running in the open court with Walkup and Kanan, got closer to the basket (51-49), at 25′. Grigonis gave “breathing” to the hosts, with Kanan bringing the derby to a point (53-52), in the 27th minute. However, the last three minutes belonged to Ataman’s team, as through its defense it “caged” the Piraeus, who made mistakes and bad choices in the attack and with Lesor and Vildosa closed the third period at +7 (59-52).

With repeated excellent defenses and Peters, Milutinov and Williams-Goss very hungry offensively, Olympiacos went on an 11-0 run in the fourth quarter, going +4 (59-63), in the first four minutes. Then, Panathinaikos responded in the same way with Slukas and Lessor pushing them in a 7-0 run, for their own +3 (66-63), in the 35th minute. The reaction of the “red and whites” was the three-pointers of Williams-Goss and Walkup, for their new lead (66-69), in the 37th minute. Grigonis responded in the same way and with two three-pointers of his own brought the “greens” ahead again (72-69). Walkup brought a new tie (72-72) followed by baskets by Sluka and Peters, for 74-74, in the 39th minute. Slukas fouled Walkup, who then missed a 3-pointer and Lessor fouled out, giving Olympiakos possession with 20.4 minutes left. Walkup missed, while Slukas did the same on a three-pointer in the exhalation and so the derby went to overtime.

After a sterile first minute from both sides, Olympiacos dominated on both sides of the floor. With terrible defenses that “exploded” the baskets and with Milutinov, Kanan and Williams-Goss very “hot” offensively, the “red and white” went on a 12-0 run (74-86) and practically “sealed” the victory that came with final 78-88.

The quarters: 22-23, 43-36, 59-52, 74-74 ff., 78-88 par.
