Bad start at WTA Finals of Cancun did the Maria Sakkari. The Greek champion, number 9 in the world, lost without putting up any resistance from her Arina Sabalenka with 6-0, 6-1 in just 74 minutes.
The 25-year-old Belarusian, who is number one in the world, dominated from the start of the match and allowed her 28-year-old opponent to win just one game. This was her seventh win in ten matches against Sakkari, whom she had beaten three times in 2023, while she had beaten her in both previous WTA Finals.
Despite the heavy defeat, Sakkari has not yet given up hope of reaching the semi-finals, but is now bound to beat Elena Rybakina (Russia, No 4), who was beaten 7-5, 6-2 by Jessica Pegula, in the early hours of Wednesday.
“It just wasn’t a good day. I don’t have much to say, I just hope to perform better in my next gameSakkari was content to say.
Tonight the action begins in the other group, with the matches Sviontek-Vodrusova (00.00) and Goff-Zamber (02.00).
