Gionis and Angelakis faced each other in the Polish Table Tennis League

by

In the derby between Bogoria and Olympia Grudiaz in Grodzisk for the sixth round of the Polish Table Tennis League, Panagiotis Gionis of the former and Konstantinos Angelakis of the latter were opponents. The two aces are not only teammates in the National team, but also in Panathinaikos, while they have a similar style of play.

In the individual matches they did not meet in the singles, however this was done in the decisive doubles and they contributed to an exciting and spectacular game. The visiting Olympia prevailed with 3-2 sets and Angelakis and his teammate Formela won in “sudden death” (6-5) in the Gionis-Badovski doubles.

In Poland’s first national division, Bogoria played two matches at the weekend as, due to their commitments in the Champions League, they are forced to follow a different schedule. In the winning game against Yaroslavl, in fact, Gionis had prevailed with a 3-0 set against Andrej Gasinas, the well-known Croatian ace among Greek fans from his successive presence in Panathinaikos and Olympiakos over the years.

In the match against Olympia Unia (also the team of Yiannis Sgouropoulos, who was absent), Gionis and Angelakis joked earlier by teasing each other, however the set-up of the trios did not lead to a match of their own. Gionis defeated the Polish Rafal Formela in his individual game with 3-0 sets and Angelakis lost with 3-1 sets against the excellent Japanese Jin Takuya.

The team match reached the doubles and Olympia won 3-2. It was a great match, with the Greeks receiving warm applause for their own very good actions, until the victory was celebrated against Gionis/Badovski by the guests Angelakis/Formela in the “sudden death” of the fifth set (11-9, 3-11 , 11-9, 8-11, 6-5).
