“Bomb” Giannakopoulou: Announced Nan to Panathinaikos!

by

I don’t know if you know Naan, the Indian bread. I like a dessert made from this bread and it’s Indian pancakes made from this Naan. From today the athlete Nan is a member of the Panathenaic family…».

With these words and a… kiss at the end, o Dimitris Giannakopoulos made his agreement known Panathinaikou by Kendrick Kan.

The 28-year-old American combo guard, who worked for Olympiakos in the summer and a little later for Armani Milano, did not find the offer he wanted in the NBA and said the big “yes” to the “clover”.

The 1.91m tall ace, who can play in the “2” as well as in the “1”, played for four seasons in the NBA, in the Heat, Lakers and Wizards. He was one of the many players not selected in the draft, but was brought up through the Heat organization, by the “brains” Erik Spoelstra and Pat Riley.

Last season he averaged 7.5 points (39.2% from three), 1.8 assists and 1.7 rebounds in 14.1 minutes with the Wizards in 31 appearances. He had started the season in Lakers averaged 6.7 points (32.5% 3-pointers), 1.4 rebounds and 0.9 assists in 13.5 minutes per game, but was traded to Washington for Rui Hachimura.

His best NBA season was his first, in 2019/20, when he had 15.3 points (35% on 3-pointers), 3.3 assists and 2.7 assists in 29.3 minutes per game in the regular season with Miami season, while playing in 15 playoff games en route to the Finals (where his team lost to the Lakers for the title) 6.1 points (27.9% on threes), 2.1 rebounds and 1.3 assists in 15 .9 minutes per match. In fact, that year he was also selected to the NBA’s top five rookies.

The left-handed guard was left without a contract in the NBA because he “paid” for not having great size (1.91m), while his strength and athleticism are not considered elite for the world’s top league. It is, however, too much for the Euroleague. Very good ball handler, with a vertical game that can create for himself and others, but also a good shooter, both spot and off the dribble. Defensively he is not… great, but he is certainly more capable than the rest of Panathinaikos’ existing guards.
