The match
The game had an excellent and fast pace early on, with Maccabi firmly ahead and at +3 (17-20), until the 6th minute. Then Armani hit the gas and with baskets in the open court made individual scores 12-2, for +7 (29-22), which it maintained until the end of the first period (32-25).
The Italians were also in control at the beginning of the second quarter, escaping to +10 (37-27). Mistakes by Messina’s players followed and Maccabi took advantage of them with Rivero and Cleveland, getting closer to the point (39-38), at 15′. From that point on, the match was a derby, with the end of the first half finding Armani ahead with a basket (52-50).
At the beginning of the second half, Armani escaped to +7 (59-52), with Maccabi responding with Colson and Brown with an 8-0 run to overtake (59-60), in the 23rd minute. The pace of the match picked up again, with the “people’s team” withstanding the pressure of the Italians and closing the third period at +3 (72-75).
With its defense and Cleveland and Colson, Maccabi escaped to +5 (76-81), at the beginning of the fourth quarter. Armani’s answer came from Mirotic and Shields, with the difference being reduced to a point (84-85), in the 37th minute. Brown then took the lead for “the people’s team” and pushed it on an 8-0 run, for +9 (84-93), with 1:40 to go. There he practically “locked” the victory, which came with the final 90-98.
