The European Aquatics Federation announced on Thursday evening that the upcoming men’s and women’s European Polo Championships will not take place in Netanya due to the war situation in Israel. The event was scheduled to be held in the Israeli city between January 3-16, 2024.
The relevant announcement by European Aquatics does not refer at all to a definitive cancellation of the event, since alternative solutions are being considered to host it elsewhere and with Germany and the Netherlands as first candidate favorites.
In detail, the announcement:
“As a consequence of the recent terrorist attacks in Israel and after extensive meetings between the European federations and the Israel Water Polo Association, the two sides have agreed that it will be impossible to host the European Water Polo Championships in Netanya, Israel, as planned for January 2024 .
Different options are currently being explored regarding the correct qualification process for the next Water Polo World Championships in Doha and more information on the matter will be shared as soon as possible.
European Aquatics would like to take this opportunity, once again, to strongly condemn those responsible for terrorist atrocities against Israeli citizens and express its support and solidarity at this difficult time for them.”
As a consequence of the recent terrorist attacks on Israel, and following extensive meetings between European Aquatics & the Israeli Water Polo Association, both institutions have agreed that it will be impossible to host #WPNetanya2024 in Netanya, Israel, as planned in Jan 2024.
