The first eternal derby of the season… painted green!
In a sensational game at the indoor “Pavlos Giannakopoulos” on Alexandras Avenue, the Panathinaikos got the thriller by beating me score 56-55of Olympiakoufor the 5th matchday of A1 Women’s basketball.
The match:
With his world Panathinaikou that had overwhelmed the Closed “Pavlos Giannakopoulos” pushing the team with his voice, the “greens” entered the match very strongly and quickly took a 7-0 lead. THE Olympic found his first points after 2.5 game minutes, however, with a surprise layup by Stamolambrou, the hosts took a 10-5 lead in the 5th minute. Spyridopoulou and Williams gave the “red and whites” offensive “breath” by making it 10-10 in the 7th minute. Somewhere in there though, Panathinaikos’ good defense allowed Kapogiannis’ team to go on a 6-0 run in the final three minutes to the 16-10 of the quarter.
The situation changed in the second period, where Olympiacos went up its performance dramatically in defense and attack, having as his big “weapon” the long shot. With two three-pointers from Spyridopoulou, the guests brought the match back to level (18-18) at 13′. Then, Christinaki and Nikolopoulou took action and with a total of eleven points, dispatched Olympiakos at +7 for 31-24 at 17′. Panathinaikos was able to “nibble” the difference and with three points from Jones in the final, closed the halftime with a score of 27-33.
In the third quarter the hard defenses, the failure, but also the many mistakes from both teams dominated, a consequence of the importance and criticality of the derby. With Nikolopoulou continuing to find scores, Olympiacos took the lead for the first time with +8 (37-29) at 22′. Panathinaikos “unstuck” aggressively and with Tsvikovics and Stamolambrou in the foreground, ran an individual 9-3 streak, reducing the difference in the basket for 40-38 at 27′. Christinaki, however, with a big three-pointer, sent Olympiakos to +5 with Williams’ shots shortly after making it 45-38, before Alexandri in the final reduced it for the home team for 45-40 in the third period.
More in a while…
