Almeida: “We didn’t finish the game and let two points slip away”

by

In his team’s inability to finish the game against Kifissia and “lock” the three points with a second goal, the coach of AEK spoke in his statements at the press conference after the end of the match at “Mihalis Kritikopoulos” in Kaisariani. Matias Almeida.

What the AEK coach said in detail:

On whether AEK paid for its many missed opportunities: “It was one of the reasons. We had the chances to finish the game. In the first half we were in control but the pace was slow, creating chances. In the second half we had more speed. We were able to take the lead, we had other chances, but the opposing goalkeeper was the man of the game. When in football you give chances to the opponent and you don’t finish the game, what happened today happens. In the phase when we conceded the goal, there were misfortunes on our side and we paid for it from some counterattacks”.

To see if he has an attitude problem: “If that was the reason, then I don’t transmit anything to my players. I talk a lot before games, especially in these matches. Before practice, before the game. If it was something like that I would have to redesign a lot of things. This question has the answer in facts. If the opposing goalkeeper did not have these reactions for which I congratulate him we would be talking about something different. This match was different to other games where we lost points, where we were not in control by making mistakes. Some days players may score goals more easily, some days not because of the opposing goalkeeper. If from the outside it looks like there is a lack of concentration, then I would have to re-design some things. There are a lot of people who take the results for granted before matches. Not me. I respect every opponent, we play 11 against 11 and you play football with love”.

As for whether he thinks more work needs to be done at the end of the phases: “We’ve been working on the finishing touches every week for a year and a half. The way I see football and my mentality is not going to change. The day I face an opponent who scores us five goals or a goal with ten touches, I will congratulate the opponent. The truth is that we let two points slip away. Yes, there is a long way to go, but based on what we did, we deserved to win the game.”.
