The Kenyan Cipto was the winner of this year’s 40th Athens Marathon. The African runner was the first to arrive at the Kallimarmaro stadium and was abhorred by the thousands of people waiting to applaud the first athlete and the rest of the participants in this classic race.
Edwin Kiprop Kipto even noted new track record, covering the distance in a time of 2 hours 10 minutes and 34 seconds. The previous best was held by compatriot Felix Kipchircir, who on 9 November 2014 had finished in 2:10.37. Kilimo finished in second place and Kitsana in third.
“I want to thank the organizers for inviting me. I want to thank my family. I wasn’t well prepared, I didn’t expect to break the record. I pushed really hard and I made it“, emphasized the winner of the classic route in his first statements.
The first Greek athlete and, of course, winner of the Panhellenic championship, which is held in the context of the Authentic Marathon of Athens, was Panagiotis Karaiskos. “It is my ninth participation and my fourth medal. I knew I was in good shape and I wanted to confirm that in the race. New goals start tomorrow“, said Karaiskos.
Charalambos Pitsolis finished with a time of 2:23.34, while Giorgos Minos was third with a performance of 2:23.56.
In women the Moroccan Atatane finished first, while Chepsitshir from Kenya came second.
