Free practice at the Las Vegas City Circuit was very short for Formula 1 free practice! In particular, the long-awaited race lasted just eight minutes, as the red flag was raised.
The cause was a… sewer cap which came off and caused a problem on the track and damage to some cars.
At the start of testing Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc was fastest, setting a time of 1:40.909 making just three passes, with Hullenberg and Magnussen in 2nd and 3rd.
After just eight minutes, however, the match was stopped. Saint’s car’s engine went out as his Ferrari suffered a problem which was picked up on television coverage.
After an inspection it was found that the lid of a sewer had come off and an immediate solution was not possible, resulting in the race management ordering the stoppage.
It should be noted that Esteban Ocon with the A523 and Zhu Guanyu’s Alfa Romeo were also damaged.
