The British Elphin Evans (Toyota) won the final race of the WRC season, the Rally Japanahead of the Frenchman Sebastien Ozierwhile the Finn Call Rovanperawho had already secured the title, finished third and gave Toyota the hat-trick at… home.
Finland’s Esapeka Lappi (Hyundai) and Japan’s Takamoto Katsuka (Toyota) completed the top five.
Evans’ last contender for second place on the world podium, Belgium’s Thierry Neville, lost everything on Friday after he crashed while temporarily occupying second place in the event.
Forced to retire for the day, the Hyundai driver returned on Saturday morning but, almost 30 minutes behind Evans at the end of the penultimate day, had missed out on a sixth WRC second place finish.
