The 5th European Under 21 Championship is being held from tomorrow at the Spa in Belgium and the Greek table tennis seeks to make its presence felt with two representatives.
Until next Sunday, the 14th of the month, the Center Sportif de Warfaaz will host the best athletes of the continent up to 21 years old and Giannis Sgouropoulos and Elisavet Terpou want to end their last year in a positive way in this age category. Sgouropoulos is one of the favorites of the event and is looking for new European medals. Terpou has quality and experience to claim the best possible positions. The event includes all the individual competitions (singles, doubles for men and women and doubles mixed) and 112 athletes from 38 countries participate. The beginning is made tomorrow by Terpou in stage 1 of the simple Young Women. Stadium, which Sgouropoulos avoids, along with 7 other favorites and goes directly to the 2nd. In the technical guidance of our champions is the men’s federal coach Costas Vatsaklis, who gives the “present” in the event for the 4th consecutive year.
Both men and women were initially formed for the simple 12 groups of 4 athletes / three. The first 8 favorites of the league do not participate in this process. The Greek ace, European champion of the category in 2019, is the 3rd favorite of the games and with him go straight to the 1st stage, in a row, the: Christian Platea (Romania), Rares Sipos (Romania), Vladimir Sintorenno (Russia), Bastien Reber (France), Laurent Devos (Belgium), Fanbo Meng (Germany) and Cedric Meisner (Germany).
The first two from each group will qualify for the next phase. The 24 athletes will complete the 8 favorites and the “32” phase will follow. Sgouropoulos will wait for the completion of stage 1 to find out, after a new draw, his opponents in the new 8 groups of stage 2.
Also, the first two of each group will qualify for the knockouts and the match will continue on the board of “16”.
In the Young Women singles, Terpou was drawn in the 8th group of stage 1. She is even led by Raquel Martins from Portugal, with whom she will work in the doubles! He also meets the Norwegian Rike Skate and the Czech Linda Zanderova.
