Official: OFI’s new coach is Mel

Mel era and officially in OFI. The Cretans announced the hiring of the Spanish technician, who signed a contract until next summer and succeeds Valdas Dabrauskas on the team’s bench.

The former coach of – among others – Betis, Rayo Vallecano, Las Palmas and Malaga will make his debut in the upcoming match against Aris for the 14th matchday of the Stoiximan Super League.

In his staff, the 60-year-old technician will have direct collaborators Alvato Montiel Nova and Pedro Caravella. Nikos Koundourakis will be an occupational physiologist and fitness coach, Giorgos Ermidis will be Sports Scientist, while in the next few days the goalkeeping coach, Antonis Lykouris, will be integrated.

The announcement

PAE OFI 1925 announces the start of the collaboration with the Spanish coach Jose (Pepe) Mel Perez, until the summer of 2024.

The 60-year-old technician (born 28/2/1963), has written his own history in Spain’s top two football divisions with almost 600 appearances in La Liga and La Liga 2, with also a presence in the Premier League as coach of West Bromwich Albion , but also with appearances in the UEFA Europa League on the bench of Real Betis, with which he even won the championship twice in La Liga 2 (2010-11 & 2014-15).

Also, among others, he has taken over the technical leadership of Deportivo La Coruna, Malaga, Las Palmas, Rayo Vallecano, Real Murcia and Tenerife.

In addition to his successful appearances on the benches of the teams he has taken over as coach, Pepe Mel has proven in his career that he is a coach who emphasizes the development of young footballers, as 35 players under the age of 20 have made their professional debuts under his instructions.
