Greece enters the battle of the second group United Cupwhose matches will take place at Sydney along with Canada and Chile. The Greek team will begin their duties on Tuesday (02/01) against Chile and the next day they will face Canada.
Speaking on the official United Cup website, Mr Stefanos Tsitsipas expressed his impatience to play in the tournament, while stressing that he has learned not to give up just like Maria Sakkari.
“Every year I am extremely excited when I represent my country in such big tournaments. It is a great honor and means more than anything else. In 2023 we had one great opportunity and a big chance to even reach the finals and have a chance to win the title.
It was the first time, that I felt that Greece was truly united as far as the players are concerned and he pursued this goal without any hesitation and without any doubt that we are really capable of achieving it.
I felt like we were so confident on the pitch. We knew that if we put the right pieces together, the puzzle can be completed and we were very close, we were extremely close in 2023. I feel like we have completed 80% of the work.
Maria and me we refuse to give up. We both fight relentlessly and try to use every weapon we have. I feel like Maria is a pretty complete player who can play anytime anywhere on the court, and that helps me a lot as a guy to play mixed doubles with her sometimes.
It’s a lot of fun to play with a fighter like Maria… even on your worst days, she refuses to let anything like this pass her by and we always tend to find ways.
I’ve had a lot of fun traveling around Australia and seeing Greeks showing up at stadiums everywhere. I feel amazing in Australia. This year in Sydney I had probably one of the best Greek support I’ve ever had at any tournament in my life.
I had an amazing atmosphere created during my match against Italy and it left me with some unforgettable, intense memories that stay in my mind. It was an absolute pleasure».
