Greece was beaten by Italy and suffered its first European defeat

Our National Men’s Polo Team suffered its first defeat at this year’s European Championship in Croatia.

After a big win over world champions Hungary in the group stage opener, the Hellas couldn’t make it “2 on 2” and secure first place in the group, losing to score 15-8 from Italy.

A result which reduces the chances of the “blue and white” for the first place in the group, with everything being judged in the last matchday. The main concern of our National Team is nothing more than to do its duty on the tail and weak, Georgiaand then wait for the result of the match between Italy and Hungary.

The match:


THE Our national team showed a very good face early in the first eight minutes, with Konstantinos Genidounias and Angelos Vlachopoulos finding the net and replying to Di Fulvio and Etsenike’s goals for the 2-2. However, the follow-up was not to be, as the Italians kept our representative group scoreless in the final four minutes of the period to close out the opening eight minutes. at +2 for 4-2.

The goal of Constantinos Giuvetsis at the beginning of the second period allowed the Hellas to reduce it to 4-3, before Di Soma, with three goals of his own, extended the lead for Italy at 7-3, effectively punishing the mistakes of the Greek team. Shortly before the end of the first half, the “blue and white” took advantage of the player above, reducing with Konstantinos Kakaris at 7-4 at halftime.

In the third quarter things did not turn out well for his team Thodori Vlachou, which in that period essentially lost any chance it had for a positive result, paying for the Italians’ accuracy, but also for its own many rejections. The “Anjou team” scored five goals in this period, with our national team finding the net twice, with Giuvetis and Vlachopoulos, for 12-6 of the octave.

In the fourth and final eight minutes, Greece was unable to take advantage of five total man-up situations, converting just two of them into goals, with goals from Kakaris and Vlachopoulos, for 13-8. And while everything was decided, Italy found two more goals in the last minute, eventually taking the win with final 15-8.
