Panathinaikos and Olympiacos left… open accounts in Leoforos and qualification will be decided in Faliro

by

One for you and one for me for Panathinaikos and Olympiakoswhich came in a draw 1-1 in the first match between them for the “16” of the Betsson Hellenic Cup and will resolve their differences regarding the qualification at quarterfinals of the event next Wednesday (17/01) at Faliro.

The Piraeus managed to implement their plan in the first half, keeping a clean sheet rather… easily and finding a goal with a shot from Alexandropoulou in the 45′after corner execution of Carvalio.

On the contrary, the “trefoil» vastly improved his image in the replay, thanks to the entry of everyone but especially Verbic and the shift of Kotsira to a central midfield role, drawing level with the celebrator Ioannidisin the 65th minute, also from a “set” ballafter Mancini’s strike.

He could, couldn’t he even the hard resetat the end of the derby, but neither the scorer nor Mladenovic managed to score a second goal in stoppage time, missing very big chances for 2-1.

In the minds of the coaches:

THE Panathinaikos lined up in formation 4-3-3, with Lodingin in goal and Kotsira, Arao, Jedvai and Mladenovic four at the back. Ruben “six”, Cerin and Bernard inside midfielders, with Aitor-Djuricic fighting on the “wings” and Ioannidis at the top of the attack.

THE Olympic on the other hand it “went down” with a system 4-2-3-1 and Paschalakis under the goalposts. Rodinei, Rezzo, Doi and Ortega four in defense. Alexandropoulos and Ese were the two midfielders on the axis, with Masoura-Richards on the wings and Carvalho behind the advanced Navarro.

The match:

Nervous and… cautious start for both teams, with Olympiakos pressing high, closing the spaces and at the same time looking for balls in the “back” of the opposing defense in order to threaten. But for Panathinaikos to keep possession of the ball longer, trying to develop and threaten mainly from his right side, but having incomplete attempts.

Phases did not occur, however, and a strong marking by Alexandropoulos, who was “yellowed” in the 10th minute, on Ruben was the only… notable event for quite some time. It is typical that we arrived at the 19th minute to see her first final in the match, from the “green” side with the shot by Bernard from the height of the large area to pass out however.

The “red and whites” responded five minutes later, albeit due to an opponent’s mistake, but Masouras did not take advantage of Kotsira’s bad turn and shot from the height of the large area at Lodingin, who blocked easily. From that phase, in fact, they also gained psychology, while in the 29th minute, Masouras again he was this time in the role of creator, in a quick counter-attack by his team, but Kotsiras cleared in time his dangerous turn from the right for Richards…

Panathinaikos remained “blocked”, lost Djuricic to injury in the 38th minute, while in the “cap” he saw Aitor make an individual effort but shoot high and miss. Four minutes later, Ioannidis recorded another final, but equally… harmless one, since his shot was a drag and Paschalakis blocked comfortably.

Having managed to get the match where he wanted, Olympiacos “struck” in the 45th minuteby Alexandropoulos to become the owner of the ball in the area, after the dismissal of Cerin and the inactivity of the defense and with a shot to achieve the 0-1 for Olympiakos!

In the derby break, Fatih Terim made a double change, replacing Aitor-Bernard with Verbic and Sporar, essentially changing his entire forward line and turning his team’s system to 4-4-2.

The “clover” brought out more tension in the first minutes in the replay and in the 53rd minute, after a corner, Verbic entered the area, shot, but sent the ball over the post. While the Slovenian winger also had a header against Rodinej, four minutes later.

Carlos Carvalhal then did the same three corrective moves, but changing faces, not mentality. With Terim answering the coaches’ chess board, passing Kotsiras to the role of “cutter” and Vagiannidis right backapparently to limit the action of Pontense.

In the end, Panathinaikos was the one who managed to find a goal, paying its opponent with the same “currency”, from a stoppage time. As from Mancini’s very good corner kick, Ioannidis with a “nailed” head sent the ball into the net of Paschalakis, unable to react, tying at 1-1 in the 65th minute!

With the psychology in their favor, the hosts tried to reach the reversal, increasing their speed, but without creating any important phase for the 2-1, while the “red and whites” tried to strike unsuccessfully in transition.

In contrast to what happened in the last minutes of the derby and especially in its delays. Where initially Ioannidis, after Mladenovic’s cross, he missed undisturbed by the height of the penaltyin 91’…

While, two minutes later, it was Verbitz’s turn to enter the area, to place the outgoing Paschalakis, who nevertheless managed to parry. To follow Mladenovic’s rebound and “scratch” that he caught to drive Doe to the line!

Panathinaikos-Olympiakos 1-1

MVP: On his birthday, Fotis Ioannidis made sure that he… gave his team a present a goal which may play a decisive role in the case of qualification! At the same time, the Greek striker had a full presence in the second half, helped by the release offered by the simultaneous presence of Andraz Sporar… Of course, he is also “charged” for the terrible opportunity he wasted in stoppage time, for the total reversal in his favor Panathinaikou…

Panathinaikos-Olympiakos 1-1

the “whistle”: He didn’t have a particularly difficult or contested phase for referee Weinberger to handle. He whistled, of course, quite a bit in the game, wanting to maintain control due to some strong markings as a result of which we also had many interruptions. In general, however, he should be stricter in disciplinary control.
