Position on the rumors about thoughts to establish player exchanges between teams in the Euroleague, was taken by the Managing Director of the Association of Players of the competition (ELPA), Bostian Nakhbar!
Through a post on Social Media, the veteran Slovenian forward with a long career in Europe and the NBA made it clear that it is almost impossible to see trades in the Euroleague, since they are unsurpassed legal difficulties relating to the “transfer” of players’ contracts from country to country.
In detail what he mentions in his post:
“The idea of trades in the EuroLeague has been in the spotlight lately. While there is no significant advantage to the EuroLeague Players’ Association agreeing to trades, it should be noted that if such a mechanism were (theoretically) created, it would raise some inevitable legal questions.
The almost impossible ‘portability’ of player contracts from country to country and from domestic league to domestic league, prevents such a system from being chosen in the first place. Players’ contracts would probably have to be terminated first and then (re)signed with a new team, under the same terms.
This essentially removes the option of switching teams as a trade as we know it in the NBA. But, if we are talking about terminating players’ contracts and then signing a contract with the new team – we actually see it (happening) already, during the Euroleague transfer window.”.
The idea of ”trade mechanism” in EuroLeague caught some attention recently. While there is no meaningful upside for @the_ELPA to agree on “trades” in EuroLeague, it should be added that in order to (in theory) create such a mechanism, this brings some unavoidable legal questions.
