Doria says contradict Bolsonaro when holding F1 São Paulo GP

by

The governor of São Paulo, João Doria (PSDB), did not miss the chance to provoke President Jair Bolsonaro (no party), his disaffection, with the holding of the São Paulo F1 GP this weekend in Interlagos.

The politician gave a press conference at Palácio dos Bandeirantes alongside the mayor of São Paulo, Ricardo Nunes (MDB), and Alan Adler, responsible for organizing the race in São Paulo.

“We have another ten years of the São Paulo Grand Prix. Back there I said that we would not lose to F1, Bruno Covas [prefeito morto em maio deste ano] he was alive and was always by my side. I went against the president of the Republic, and F1 will be in São Paulo,” stated Doria during a press conference this Wednesday afternoon (10).

The city of São Paulo tried to extend the link with the category since 2018 –the previous contract was valid until 2020–, while Bolsonaro articulated, including the signing of a cooperation agreement, to bring the event to Rio de Janeiro. In June 2019, the president even said that the GP had a “99% chance” of being held in the capital of Rio de Janeiro.

According to Doria, the financial impact of F1 will be R$ 810 million and will generate 8,500 temporary jobs in the city of São Paulo.

“The expectation is even higher, and the data will be audited by the Getúlio Vargas Foundation,” stated Doria. “The Grand Prix during the holiday increases revenue generation. All tickets were sold in advance, of those 77% to residents outside of São Paulo, which makes the event even more important to our economy.”

More than 170 thousand people are expected over the three days of the event. Among the news this year, on Saturday (13), at 4:30 pm, the sprint race will be held, a shorter race, with 24 laps and duration of 30 minutes, which will define the starting grid.

The race, on Sunday, will start at 14:00 – 71 laps. Dutchman Max Verstappen, from Red Bull, defends his leadership of the World Cup against seven-time champion Lewis Hamilton, from Mercedes, in a season full of emotion. Verstappen scores 312.5 points, and Hamilton 293.5.

Doria guaranteed that there will be reinforcement of policing in the shopping and leisure areas close to the racecourse, in the south zone of the capital of São Paulo.

About 5,000 military police will be deployed to the outskirts of Interlagos from Friday (12) to Sunday, as well as part of the Civil Police and Metropolitan Civil Guard (GCM). “There are 1,900 vehicles, 50 dogs, 250 horses, 40 drones and 3 helicopters specifically for the surveillance of the racecourse”, says General João Camilo Pires de Campos, secretary of Public Security (SSP).

The holding of the event in São Paulo, such as the sheet showed on Tuesday, is considered an asset by the Doria management. Home of F1 since 1990, Interlagos suffered from competition from Rio de Janeiro when it came to renewing the contract with FOM (Formula One Management), the category’s commercial arm.

The previous contract was signed in 2014, valid until the end of 2020. This last year, as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the race was canceled in Brazil.

For F1 in the capital of Rio de Janeiro, the Rio Motorsports consortium made a proposal to the FOM to pay US$ 65 million (R$ 360 million) – being US$ 35 million (R$ 194 million) for the race fee in Rio de Janeiro and US$ 30 million (BRL 166 million) to acquire the F1 broadcasting rights in Brazil.

The consortium, which had won a bid for the construction and operation for 35 years of a racetrack in the Deodoro region, in Rio de Janeiro, was unable to obtain approval for the environmental impact study (EIA) in order to begin construction of the racecourse.

The current agreement covers the 2021 to 2025 seasons – and is extendable for another five years –, and São Paulo will have to pay US$ 25 million (R$ 138 million) annually. Of this amount, the City Hall is responsible for US$ 15 million (R$ 83 million), and the state government will pay the other US$ 10 million (R$ 55 million).

In return for paying the fee, the City of São Paulo won space for publicity in the race and transferred four quotas to Doria’s management, at an estimated value of R$ 8 million each.

This Wednesday, Vinicius Lummertz, secretary of Tourism for the state, said that the state of São Paulo has negotiated three quotas, totaling R$ 18 million, for business groups.

The city will also transfer R$ 20 million annually to MC Brazil Motorsport Holding, which is committed to assembling the structure and organization of the event in the city of São Paulo.

In addition to the fee paid to the FOM, the city will transfer R$ 100 million (R$ 20 million for five years) to MC Brazil Motorsport Holding, which assumed the role that used to be from Interpub. The company will be responsible for assembling the entire structure of the event and its organization. The municipality guarantees that it did a good deal. These expenses alone amounted to at least R$ 40 million per stage.
