Emilio Ensué: From Euro winner with Spain against Greece in 2007, to hat-trick with Equatorial Guinea

by

Oldest player to score three goals in one game at Africa Cup of Nations became Emilio Ensue in her victory Equatorial Guinea 4-2 against Guinea-Bissau. The fourth goal for his team was scored by the player of Niki Volos, Jose Miranda, in the 46th minute, assisted by the goalkeeper Jezus Obono.

This was the first hat-trick in the competition in almost 16 years, with the previous one coming from Morocco’s Sofiane Aloudi in a 5-1 win over Namibia on 21 January 2008.

The most impressive element of the case, of course, is that Ensue plays mainly as a right back-half in the teams he plays for, having made few appearances as central striker in his career with most being with his national team.

The 34-year-old was born in Spain and started his career with Mallorca making 102 appearances in La Liga. He has been an international with all the minor national teams of Spain with a highlight winning the Euro with U19 in 2007, defeating Greece in the final!

The continuation of his course found him in England with Middlesbrough and Birmingham, spending three years in Cyprus with APOEL (twice) and Apollon Limassol. From 2022 he is a player of Intercity (in the third division of Spain), with seven goals and one assist in 15 games.

In 2013 he decided to play for Equatorial Guinea at Men’s level and is now the top scorer in their history.

THE Equatorial Guinea have made an impressive start to the Africa Cup of Nations and are in first place in the group with 4 points behind Nigeria with whom they drew 1-1 in the opener. Third is the organizer Côte d’Ivoire with three points and last is Guinea-Bissau who have already been eliminated.
