The “civil war” between Promethea and AEK Betsson for the premiere of the “16” stage of the BCL was extremely exciting, with the Patrinas triumphing in the… yarn and ideally starting their obligations in the 12th group of the competition, in which is also Hapoel Holon and Murcia!
The match was balanced throughout its duration, with Prometheus taking advantage of its amazing three-point percentage (50% with 14/28) and finally reaching the victory with 80-79!
The match
With Hale, Koniari, Jones, Karagiannidis and Chrysikopoulos, Elias Papatheodorou started the game, who could not count on the services of the injured Etzenige, while Platha chose Hall, McRae, Natzipoglou, Agravani and Tillman for his starting five, having outside of Kuzminska, Flioni and with newcomer Austin Hollins included for the first time in the Union’s twelve.
The match was balanced at the beginning, with Chrysikopoulos scoring four points for 7-4 in favor of Prometheus. Netzipoglou tied it with a difficult layup at 7-7, but the Patriots started the match with 3-of-3 3-pointers, while Stephens provided solutions when he entered the floor, scoring for 12-7. After five consecutive unsuccessful attempts, AEK hit their first three-pointer with Randle, for 12-12, but Jones answered immediately for 15-12. The hosts held on to a slim lead before Morgan and Knight cut it to 20-18 in the first period.
AEK took its first lead of the match (20-21) at the beginning of the second quarter, while the… quiet until that point of the match, Cowan, put Prometheus in front again (25-22) with a crazy free-kick! From 27-24 onwards, AEK played back-to-back very good defenses, holding Prometheus without a point for 3.5 minutes and going on a 14-1 run, escaping with a double-digit lead for the first time (28-38). However, Prometheus managed to reduce it before the end of the first half (35-40), with three-pointers from Reynolds and Hale.
The third period began with Morgan scoring from close range and McRae hitting a 3-pointer to make it 37-49, before Hale’s 3-pointer of his own made it 12 points to cut it to 40-46. From 42-51 onwards, Prometheus went on an impressive 18-4 run, with back-to-back 3-pointers and led by Cowan, who hit 8 straight to make it 17, putting his team back in the lead (60-55 ). Tillman became the leading scorer of AEK (14p) reducing to 60-57, before 62-58 with which the third quarter ended.
The quarters: 20-18, 35-40, 62-58, 80-79
