In another wonderful “performance” for the benefit of table tennis, this time offered only by top athletes of the men’s national team, Olympiacos got revenge from Panathinaikos, winning the set 4-3, while it had lost in the first round and in the tie prevails by set.
The spectacular and perfectly balanced match took place in front of around 120 fans and lasted three and a half hours.
Four games before the final, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos are together at the top with 19 points, Piraeus is 31-29 in the sets of the two games, however the results between them are not related to the playoffs and the ranking position is simply calculated (the first of of regular duration will meet the fourth and the second the third).
Olympiacos achieved a victory over Panathinaikos in A1 women’s division as well, increased their undefeated streak overall, defeating second-placed AEK and essentially secured first place already in the regular season.
The men’s A1 continued with the ninth and tenth matches at the Philippian Gymnasium and the University Gymnasium of Gallos in Rethymno.
In Veria, apart from the classic derby, the match between AO Tataula and OEA Thessaloniki was interesting. Tataula lost Gerasimos Hatzilygeroudis who fell ill, but the Thessaloniki team also had no foreign athletes in its composition and became an outsider.
Tataula prevailed with 4-1 sets and, in fact, in all sets they covered the handicap they had from the defeat by the same score against Thessaloniki in the first round and are favored for a possible tie at the end.
In the matches of the tenth round, Olympiacos and Panathinaikos confirmed their role as favourites, however, on an individual level, Papadimitriou’s victory over Angelakis with a 3-1 set is noteworthy.
And if Tataula and OEA Thessaloniki do not avoid positions 5-8, then in Rethymno there were crucial games against the background of claiming the playoffs 1-4. Pera Athens won, who progressed with two wins and entered the top four, the “hosts”, who experienced two defeats and got out of it, lost. At noon, they suffered a narrow defeat against AEK, which remains in third place.
In detail, the progress of the match Olympiacos-Panathinaikos 4-3:
Giannis Sgouropoulos-Panagiotis Gionis 1-3 (11-7, 6-11, 8-11, 9-11)
Giorgos Stamatouros-Constantinos Angelakis 3-0 (11-7, 11-8, 11-1)
Tasos Riniotis-Konstantinos Konstantinopoulos 1-3 (9-11, 11-6, 4-11, 1-11)
Sgouropoulos-Angelakis 3-0 (11-6, 11-7, 11-7)
Riniotis-Gionis 2-3 (11-6, 6-11, 7-11, 11-4, 9-11)
Stamatouros-Konstantinopoulos 3-2 (3-11, 12-10, 11-6, 9-11, 11-3)
Sgouropoulos/Stamatouros-Gionis/Konstantinopoulos 3-1 (11-4, 12-14, 11-5, 11-9)
DEVELOPMENTS IN WOMEN’S A1
Matches between the historic and leading sports clubs of Olympiakos, Panathinaikos and AEK were included in the ninth and tenth matchday and in the A1 women’s league in SEF. Simply there, the competitive data are different and Olympiacos once again showed its superiority.
Initially, they defeated the second-placed AEK 4-1, later they defeated the third-placed Panathinaikos by the same score, and they continue to mathematically secure first place in the regular season.
AEK’s match with Pera was of importance for places 1-4. Reinforced with both of its foreign athletes, the Union had the first say and confirmed it with a score of 4-1 sets.
Pera also lost to Panathinaikos, not easily, however, as Toliou beat Knezevic with 3-2 sets and Paridis beat Chekoura in the end with the same score.
We note that only the top four teams were in action, as the matches that were to take place in Kavala against the local ASEA, GAO Piraeus, Sarises Florina and CHANTH have been postponed.
