15-year-old Valieva vindicated by CAS – Returns to Indoor Olympics

by

Provisional acquittal for Kamila Valieva. The 15-year-old Russian, who left the world speechless with her two quadruple spins in the Winter Olympics team, was found positive for a banned substance (trimetazidine, a heart medicine) shortly after her race and was banned from participating in the individual .

However, after appealing to the CAS, it was decided to temporarily acquit the charges and give her the right to participate in Tuesday’s individual, in order not to suffer irreparable damage when the case is final. However, Valieva is still in danger, if she wins a medal, of being deprived in the future if it is finally judged that she had received a banned substance.

The CAS (International Sports Court) referred to “exceptional circumstances” in its decision, including Valieva’s status as a “protected person” under the World Anti-Doping Code, punishment could cause her “irreparable harm”. The court upheld the decision of the Russian Anti-Doping Agency. Because Valieva is not yet 16 years old, she is considered a “protected person” under the WADA Anti-Doping Code, which means she will be subject to lighter penalties and may be exempt from public disclosure regulations.
