Statements after the defeat of the national polo team in the quarter-finals of the World Championship by Italy, made by Giannis Fundoulis.
Speaking to the ERT camera, the team captain emphasized that he and his teammates fought hard and really wanted to qualify, while he also mentioned the need to regroup, in view of the upcoming Olympic Games.
In detail what the captain of the national team said:
“It is very difficult to digest what happened. I think throughout the game we were better. In the last 2.5 minutes we were two goals ahead. We immediately conceded a goal, the referee blew the whistle for an immediate dismissal. In the next opportunity we had one player more, but not only did we not score, but we conceded a goal on the counter.
We fought a lot today, we really wanted to, but we just couldn’t do it. Let’s keep our heads up, no matter how hard it is, because in a few months we have the Olympic Games and there all the games will be life or death.
I don’t know if it’s a matter of concentration. When the match went to two goals, the Italians pressed, risked more. Their defense is such that they hit the opposition even in a situation with a player less. I don’t know if there was a mistake in the execution and we were led to the Italian counterattack or if an Italian player took a risk and left the defense and went into the counterattack. If we scored, we locked up the win. We conceded six points at the end, we didn’t manage to equalize in the last phase”.
