In the “16” of the Conference League through Budapest o Olympic! With another excellent performance since Jose Luis Mendiliber took over the team, the Piraeus they defeated Ferencvaros 1-0 and with a total score of 2-0 they advanced to the next phase of the institution.
“Golden” scorer again Ayoub El Kaabiwho scored the only goal of the match with a well-placed penalty kick that he won himself in the 45th minute.
Her Friday (23/02) at 14:00 the drawwith the “red and white” learning the opponent in the next phase.
In the coach’s mind
Formation 4-4-2 chose the Dejan Stankovic, with Dibus under the posts and Wingo, Cisse, Mahe and Civic in defence. The four in the center were Zakariasen, Fani, Maiga and Marquinios, with Varga and Contro in attack.
On the other hand, Mr Jose Luis Mendiliber lined up his team with 4-3-3, having Paschalakis in goal and Rodinei, Retso, Carmo and Ortega in defense. Cicinho, Horta and Ese are a trio in midfield, with Pontense-Fortouni at the ends of the attack and El Kaabi at the top.
The match
The Hungarians came into the match expectedly stronger, however after a quarter of meaningless superiority, they saw the “red and whites” gaining yards on the pitch.
Piraeus won successive corners, with El Kaabi (25′, 30′) and Retso (26′) to threaten with headers, while in the 34th minute o Zakariasen shot out after a mistake in the defense of Olympiakos.
Paschalakis blocked Contro’s long-range shot in the 37th minute and somewhere in there the Mendiliber team skyrocketed their performance, losing two unique opportunities within two minutes!
First o Fortounis (38′) shot out in four after Horta’s incredible cross and then o Pontense (39′) he took advantage of a mistake in the Magyar defense but shot high from a good position.
Nevertheless, the goal came in the 45′. Mahe made a hand inside the area, with Turpin seeing the phase in the VAR and… taking back the foul he had given to Pontense by showing the white bullet.
THE El Kaabi performed flawlessly and so Olympiacos went to the locker room with a lead.
One would have expected Stankovic’s men to come out stronger in the second half, but instead, Mendiliber’s men continued to be in control.
The pace was high but many phases were not recorded, with the Dibus to comfortably neutralize the shot of Fortounis (53′) and Mahe (62′) and Cisse (63′) to have headers out.
In the 68th minute, Podense made a spectacular goal rambunctious from the left and forced the Ferencvaros keeper into an impressive save, with Horta having a shot wide three minutes later. This was followed by a nice Cicinho turn that ended up in the arms of Dibus (73′), who saved his team from a great shot by Jovetic in the 83′ when he tipped in a corner.
Time was running out and the Hungarians couldn’t find the goal that would put them back in the match, Katona shot out in the 90+2′ as did Masouras and somewhere there the modest ceremony ended, with Olympiakos doubling the victories and qualifying !
MVP: Many Olympiacos players distinguished themselves, however we will single out the terrible one Andre Horta. The Portuguese midfielder has linked up extremely well with Ciquinho-Ese and put in a big performance, probably forcing the Piraeus people to think about his buyout clause from Braga…
The… whistle: Easy evening for the multi-expert Turpentinewho needed help only in the penalty phase, when he found after using VAR the handball in the area after the foul on Pontense and awarded the final penalty.
