The two-time European champion Dauren Kurugliev swore a Greek oath before the general secretary of Citizenship, Mr. Angelos Demosthenos, and promised to give his best, in view of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
“Naturalization is much more than a legal process and today we have the pleasure of naturalizing a Greek athlete, who has already honored the colors of our country with his successes. I wish him all the best in the Olympics and make us proud once againsaid Angelos Demosthenus.
For his part, Dauren Kurougliev thanked everyone for their actions and emphasized that he will fight with all his strength to honor Greece.
“I would like to thank the Prime Minister of Greece Kyriakos Mitsotakis, the Deputy Minister of Sports Yannis Vroutsis, the Secretary General of Citizenship Angelos Demosthenous, the Hellenic Wrestling Federation and everyone who helped me to get Greek citizenship. The match now begins. I want to make all Greeks proud and honor Greece! I will never forget those who helped me to fulfill my dream! I really feel very happy” said Dauren Kurugliev.
Kurugliev was born in Dagestan, the Russian province with a long wrestling tradition. He was a two-time champion of Russia in 2018 and 2020, European champion in 2017 and first in the 2019 European Games in Baku. The war in Ukraine and the ban on participating in international events led the 30-year-old to search for a solution to continue fighting abroad and he found it through the Hellenic Wrestling Federation, which closed him down and included him in its workforce.
