Spanoulis: “I am very proud of my players, the way we play is fantastic”

by

bwin Peristeri celebrated a big win over Hapoel Jerusalem, keeping their hopes of qualifying for this year’s BCL quarter-finals alive, with Vasilis Spanoulis to eulogize his players after the end of the match held in Budapest.

The Greek coach spoke about his team’s progress in this year’s tournament, emphasizing that they won against teams with a much bigger budget, while adding that he feels proud of his players and described the way they play as fantastic!

In detail what he said:

“It’s another big day for our team. We changed the whole team because we had to, as players from last year’s team had to leave for better teams and wages. We rebuilt the team from scratch and now I can say that we achieved great things in my second season at Peristeri bwin.

We managed to beat top teams in the competition, like Malaga, like Hapoel today, like Carcillaga. These are big steps. We have by far the smallest budget in the group. We play three teams that are contenders for the Final 4 and even to win the trophy. And it is one of the toughest, if not the toughest, in the history of the BCL Round of 16.

I am very proud of my players. The way we play is fantastic. In the first match against Hapoel we conceded 66 points. Now 61. These are huge numbers for our effort. It is our identity. I have great respect and an excellent relationship with coach Ilias (Kantzouris). We are partners in the National team and he is doing a great job in Hapoel. I wish him the best.

We will do everything we can to get to the Top-8. If God wants and allows it, we will be there. If not, to me it’s like we’re there. For a shot in the first match against Hapoel we could be in the “8” without the last game. Sometimes you need luck, but I don’t believe in luck as much as I believe in effort.

This group of players have my respect. Much is new to them. Regular pieces, the pressure, mental pressure and they go through it all season. I told them that if you continue to have faith in the plan, great things will come.”.
