Gustavo Poget gave a new interview, this time to Skysports, through which he also addressed the issue of his stay.
With the Uruguayan national coach pointing out that the renewal of his contract with our National Team will be clarified after the upcoming games.
But also that this uncertainty is more difficult for international footballers, explaining why this happens.
What Poget said in detail:
About his contract: “I have nothing to hide about my situation. My contract expires on March 31st, it’s a strange situation. Not for one, as a player my contract was coming to an end and it was more difficult because I had to play, but I still wasn’t afraid and played every time until the last minute. It is easier as a coach, there is not the same risk, but it creates uncertainty, especially with my partners. They would like to know what is going to happen next month. It’s not new for me, maybe I expected something to happen sooner, but I dealt with the situation in a normal way and we will decide in April. It’s strange for the players too, we had a very good relationship. When things are going well, the players feel that they are in a good place, we spend time together, we win together, we celebrate and we are in touch often, because I don’t spend time with them in training on a daily basis. There is a relationship outside of football. The worst for them would be if we qualified and I wasn’t there at the Euros. Some say it’s not likely, but why not? It’s football! I try to leave those out, that’s what I’ll tell the players when we meet. We will have to concentrate on the games and see what happens next.”
For Odysseus Vlachodemos: “Everyone should know that in football things change very quickly. Vlachodemos was number 1 in a top club, not only in Portugal, but also in European competitions. He was always a key player, winning titles and playing every year in the Champions League. When you change teams, a lot can happen. Other people, other coaches, other ways of understanding football and many times the situation is difficult. But, the facts in the National team are completely different. For example, I have to make decisions to play who I know, who I trust the most and who is in the best condition. There are different perspectives, but I have my own ideas and the results will show if it is a decision I made or not. I feel very comfortable with my decisions. I know the players well, I know what they can give us and I trust them when they step on the pitch.”
