Athletics coach Kostas Ilias “passed away”.

by

The long-time federal coach Kostas Ilias passed away today at just 56 years old. The experienced technician, who was hospitalized last week in a serious condition, offered his services in the field of athletics for many decades.

Western Attica was his base starting in 1984 at GS Aspropyrgos, an association of which he was a founding member. However, his name was mainly associated with that of AO Megaron, a club in which he worked for many years and brought out dozens of athletes who stood out in Panhellenic Championships and in the national teams. The biggest moment of his career came in 2018 when his athlete Maria Belimbasaki won the silver medal in the 400m at the European Open Track and Field Championships in Berlin. In the years he worked both at the AO Megaron and as a Federal coach, he trained – in addition to Belimbasaki – dozens of sportsmen and women such as Andreas Pantazis, Vasiliki Takhtara, Korina Politis, Anna Kiafa, Ierotheos Dritsas, Panagiotis Trivyzas, Katerina Dalaka, Artemis Anastasiou and many others, while he was also a responsible coach for the relay teams. His loss spreads sadness to the athletics family, his loved ones and his sportsmen and women athletes.

The president of SEGAS, Sofia Sakorafa, and the board of directors of SEGAS as a whole express their deep regret for the sudden event and their sincere condolences to his family and loved ones.

The funeral of Kostas Ilias will take place on Thursday (18/4) at 11.00 in the holy church of Agia Triada in Aspropyrgos.
