Girona is waiting for UEFA’s approval to play in the Champions League

by

Position in Champions League of the next season, mathematics was also closed Gironawhich beat Barcelona 4-2 on Saturday, for its 34th matchday LaLiga.

However, the participation of the Spanish team in the top interclub event for next year is not a given, as the approval of the European Confederation remains, due to the club’s share status.

Girona is 47% owned by City Football Group, which is the company that “runs” among other 13 clubs and Manchester City.

According to Article 5 for UEFA competition regulations, teams with the same shareholding status are prohibited from playing in the same competitions.

In fact, the regulations stipulate that if two teams from the same ownership group qualify for the same UEFA competition, the team that finishes higher in their domestic league takes the place. If the two teams finish in the same positionthen the one with the highest club coefficient (in this category City prevails) gets the “ticket” for the event.

Currently “citizens” need two points to secure second place in the Premier League, while they can win the title in England if they make it three from three in their remaining league games. In such an eventuality, the English team will get the ticket provided for the City Football Group, since they will be higher than Girona, according to the aforementioned regulations.

There are, of course, some sources that state that it is unlikely that Girona will be relegated to the Europa League, since the Spanish club is expected to officially declare that it has no organizational relationship with Manchester City and will get permission to play in the Champions League.

City Football Group owns 47% of Girona, while 35% belongs to businessman Marcelo Clore who is also the chairman of Bolivar from Bolivia, another team belonging to the same investment group. The president of the club is Pere Guardiola, brother of City’s Pep.

However, it is worth noting that Leipzig and Salzburg, both of which belong to the Red Bull group, have been duly licensed to play in the Champions League in recent seasons, while last July UEFA accepted a number of clubs that share ownership status. .

These are Aston Villa and Guimarães, Brighton and Saint-Jiloise, AC Milan and Toulouse, which were duly authorized to participate in European competitions following a hearing by the relevant UEFA body.
