Victory of the basketball team of Panathinaikos, “Pana”, as the German journalists usually refer to the Athens team, in the final of the “final four” of the Euroleague in Berlin, is extensively covered by the German media.
References to the protagonists of the match, Kosta Sluka and Ergin Ataman, to the explosive atmosphere inside the Uber Arena, but also to the incidents noted by fans outside the field, fill the reports.
Special mention is made by the German press of the presence in the stadium of NBA stars Giannis Atedokounmpo, veteran Scottie Pippen and the captain of the German national team, Dennis Schroeder.
“Between ecstasy and riots the victory of Panathinaikos”, reports the newspaper Tagesspiegel and notes that the event offered “excellent moments of the sport and a wonderful atmosphere in the stands, especially from the fans of Panathinaikos”. The final was clearly a “home” match, writes the editor.
Away from the stadium, however, the newspaper comments, “there were several incidents, with arrests and injuries”. As highlighted in the publication, following Saturday’s incidents, the police significantly increased their presence, while a helicopter and water cannons were put on standby, in an operation described as “unusually large, even for a football match”. In the final, however, it is clarified, “the focus was on sports”.
“Panathinaikos triumphs over Real Madrid” is the title of the report of Radio-Television Berlin-Brandenburg rbb, where it speaks of a “shocking duel”.
The team around the top scorer Kosta Sluka “couldn’t miss the victory”, points out rbb and highlights the fact that for the coach of the “greens” Ergin Ataman it is the third triumph in the Euroleague in four years.
“A basketball legend in appearance – a surprise in the final,” writes BILD, referring to Scottie Pippen, who watched not only the “final four” games, but also the German Cup final in soccer between Bayer Leverkusen and of Kaiserslautern, which took place on Saturday at the Olympic Stadium in Berlin.
The newspaper refers in detail to the intense presence of Panathinaikos fans in the Uber Arena for the final and the atmosphere they created. “Terrible! Today the stadium is greener than on Friday”, notes the newspaper and adds that when Panathinaikos went in front of the score “the stadium shook” from the “explosive” atmosphere.
“The first title since 2011 – Panathinaikos conquers the Euroleague”, is the title of the report of the German public television ARD, in which it emerges that the Greek team now holds the record for victories in the competition. “The coach of Panathinaikos is a Euroleague specialist,” emphasizes ARD.
“Panathinaikos dethrones Real,” writes the N-tv television station in a report on its website.
The sports magazine “Kicker”, in its online edition, hosts extensive videos with reports from the development of the final, where there is talk of a “Sluka show” and a “frenzy” of Panathinaikos fans. “Here is the new champion” is the title of the report.
