Full of… news was his press conference Vasilis Spanoulis after the loss and elimination of Peristeri bwin by Olympiakos in the semifinals of the Stoiximan Basket League.
Beyond the confirmation that Giannis Antetokounmpo will play normally in the pre-Olympic tournament, the Greek coach was asked to comment on his future in the western suburbs team, stressing that there have been discussions with the management but everything is open.
What he said in detail:
For the match with Olympiakos and the elimination: “It was the second game of the series. We came in a bit sluggish, but in the second period we were able to come back. We don’t have the depth and quality that Olympiacos has, to continue at such a high level. We fought but it was not possible to win the game. Congratulations to Olympiakos.
I believe that we have had a historic year both in Greece and in Europe. I can’t ask for anything more from the guys. They also gave their souls. The difference in quality is huge. All year long we were competitive against the “eternals” and against the rest of the teams. I am very proud of our players. They’ve gone up a lot, they’ve helped the team a lot, they’ve gotten a lot of people involved with them. I am very proud of both this year and last year. Peristeri will remember these great moments. We have one more game against Aris to finish the championship marathon.”
For the bwin Pigeon season: “Hard work, many hours of training and speeches. I tried to put the children in a different direction than what they were used to. To play a really high level of basketball. I think we succeeded for the most part. We dominated for another year in the Greek league after Panathinaikos and Olympiakos.
We had an even better year than last year with 15 wins. We went to the BCL Final Four and struggled in possession. We were down by 2 points at 50” to go. The children have made an extra effort. I didn’t expect so quickly to have such a wonderful year.
As far as the time is concerned, there has been a discussion with the administration. Nothing more. We’ll see from there. I have a great relationship with the team. She is the first one I trained and started my coaching career. It was my initiative to start from Peristeri and I was justified. I was sure this would happen. I was a coach in a very well organized team, which had no financial problems. Peristeri has a normal budget. There are teams below with bigger budgets than us. I think we made good moves.
From there, it is good to ask the management. I do not know what will happen. I have to sit and think too. At the moment I have a week and then you know my mind will be on the National team, because I have taken on a huge responsibility and we have to succeed. We have a responsibility towards ourselves and towards the Greek people, our country and the next generations to bring Greek basketball back to the top and at the level of national teams”.
Regarding Giannis Antetokounmpo’s participation in the Pre-Olympic tournament: “Yes, Giannis will be present in the national team.”
