England and “green” Slovenia made it to the round of 16 hand in hand…

by

Their ticket for the “16” of Euro 2024 was booked by England and the historical Slovenia.

The two teams stayed at 0-0 in Cologne, in the context of the 3rd and last matchday of the 3rd group. So, combined with 0-0 and at Denmark-Serbiathe “Three Lions” captured her first classwhile Slovenia the 3rdas it fell short of 2nd Denmark – with which it had absolute balance – in the criterion of “Fair Play” (indeed… they were -also- stepped on by their staff!)

The group score:

Terrible celebrations at the final from the Slovenians, who they qualified for the first time in its history to the “16” (in their second appearance in the final phase)!

Another game that England struggled with. In a match in general with few moments. Several of them, however, belonged to Slovenia, which for its part fared quite well.

Basic ones Cherin and Sporar -with the first emerging as o MVP from UEFA- while o Verbich stayed on the bench. All three Panathinaikos players, therefore, will continue their presence in the fields of Germany.

Debut in the event for Palmer as a change, for the non-use of which in the first two matches Gareth Southgate had been strongly criticized.

The match

Slovenia was the one who came into the game better, having also the first phase with his weak header Sesco in the 5′. Mathias Keck’s group was not limited to inhibitory orientations. Barely. At the same time, in fact, she did not allow the English to make a show of her.

The Slovenians continued to come out with claims in the attack, threatening in the 19′ by Sporar which had several moments.

In the 20′ England found the back of the net, but his goal Satchel properly canceled due to offside. The “Three Lions” had huge percentages in possession of the ball (at 73%), but without making use of it. Completely pointless, with a lack of creativity and without a finish against Slovenia who closed the spaces very well.

From the first half hour onwards, it seemed as if England started to… raise the stakes, which threatened to double with Kane (30′ and 31′). In the 35′ The Oblak blocked after a nice direct free kick by him Satchelwhile at 40′ after the diagonal fill from the TrippierThe Kane he didn’t have time to make the projection for a while, so he sent the ball into the net! Thus, the first half ended without a score.

One change at the start of the second half was for England. In particular, Southgate passed him Mainow instead of Gallagher, wanting to provide extra creation from the midfielders.

Indeed, typically the home side came in stronger, having some moments with Bellingham, Foden and Kane.

With an interval of… 20 minutes, England – who, without doing anything special, were superior in the second half – created good moments with the scissors Satchel (58′) and his shot Rice (75′).

Nothing else in between, with Slovenia at the same time probably starting to look at both the… yellows and the ‘Fair Play’ criterion (due to their absolute tie with Denmark), if and anyway – with the ongoing results- qualified as 3rd.

The last good moment belonged again to England, with Oblak in the 90’+2′ to block the newcomer’s place Palmer.

MVP: UEFA named him MVP Adam Cherin, who covered many kilometers on the field (he ran a total of 11.8 km). If he was even more accurate, he would have an even better “score”.

The compositions of the two teams:

England (Gareth Southgate): Pickford – Walker, Stones, Gueye, Trippier (84′ Alexander-Arnold) – Gallagher (46′ Maynow), Rice – Saka (71′ Palmer), Bellingham, Foden (89′ Gordon) – Kane.

Slovenia (Matiaz Kek): Oblak – Karnicic, Drkusic, Bigol, Janza (90’+1′ Balkovec) – Stojanovic, Cerin, Elsnik, Mlakar (86′ G. Stankovic) – Sporar (86′ Celar), Cesko (75′ Ilicic).

The referee of the match was the Frenchman Clement Turpinwhile VAR his compatriot, Jerome Brizard.
