Thus, Mercedes took their second consecutive victory, after that of Russell in Austria the previous week. THE Max Verstappen with Red Bull he finished in 2nd place and Lando Norris with McLaren in 3rd, while Russell failed to take advantage of the pole position he had, after retiring with a mechanical problem on the 34th lap. The race:
Clean start, with the two Mercedes staying 1-2 and with Verstappen passing Norris to 3rd, while Leclerc gained three places, moving from 11th to 8th! Hulkeberg lost the first laps, who fell from 6th to 9th place. Meanwhile, Gasli’s Alpine suffered a gearbox problem on the formation lap, retiring before the race had even started.
The first 10 laps were uneventful and the top ten remained clean, while Leclerc had a very good pace, passing Stroll as well, to move up to 7th and behind team-mate Saint. At the same time, the fast Norris took advantage of the DRS and took back 3rd place from Verstappen, on the 15th lap, while on the 17th the Dutchman also saw the second McLaren, of Piastri, overtake him, falling to 5th.
On lap 18 it started to rain and… it was up and down, with Hamilton passing Russell and the two Mercedes dueling and going off the track, while Norris took advantage of the situation and after initially moving up to 2nd, then passed Hamilton, taking the lead. Meanwhile, with Mercedes continuing to slip, Piastri moved up to 2nd for McLaren’s 1-2, while Leclerc pitted for a tire change and dropped to 16th. As for Verstappen, he continued to lose pace, seeing Sainz approach his mirrors.
The rain returned on lap 26, with Verstappen pitting first to change tyres, then everyone pitted for the intermediate tyre, with Piastri staying in for another lap. This resulted in him returning to the track in 6th, with Norris remaining in the lead, with Hamilton behind him, while Verstappen moved up to 3rd. At the same time, Russell retired with a mechanical problem on the 34th lap, ignominiously finishing the race that started with pole position.
With the track now dry, the drivers returned to the pits for their final tire change, with Hamilton taking advantage and returning to first place, 2.5″ ahead of Norris, with both on soft tyres, while 3rd Verstappen came back on hard rubber and was picking up the pace, with 10 laps to go in the finale! Finally, Verstappen managed to pass Norris on lap 49, but was unable to threaten Hamilton, who saw the checkered flag first, celebrating his historic return to the top step of the podium after almost 2.5 years!
