The LFP (League de Football Professional) announced this Friday (4) the decision to suspend the contract for broadcasting the French Championship in Russia.
The action is yet another consequence of the war started by Vladimir Putin’s government against Ukraine. In a note, Ligue 1 stated that there is no deadline for the tournament to be shown again in the country.
“The LFP has decided to suspend from this day the contract to broadcast Ligue 1 Uber Eats in Russia on the Match TV network,” the French league said in a statement.
The French Championship is also shown in the country by the streaming platform Wink, however, as it is a sublicense of Match TV, the agreement is also suspended.
The Premier League is expected to be the next to adopt the measure, according to Premier League president Richard Masters. In an interview with the Financial Times, he said the deal was under review.
“As far as our broadcasting agreements in Russia are concerned, it is clear that they are under review. [os contratos] very closely in its terms of suspension or termination. Everything is happening now. The situation is changing rapidly,” Masters said.
The Premier League is also shown in Russia on Match TV, a channel owned by Gazprom Media, a subsidiary of the state-owned gas supplier, which recently had several sponsorship contracts suspended, such as its tie with UEFA.
Both Ligue 1 and the Premier League have announced that they will show support for Ukraine in the next matches, such as using the country’s colors on their social media pages.
