by

São Paulo arrived this Saturday (5th) to the seventh game undefeated in the Paulista Championship. In the duel in which Corinthians promoted the debut of its new coach, the Portuguese Vítor Pereira, the São Paulo team won the classic played at Morumbi by 1-0.

Jonathan Calleri, with just 52 seconds into the game, was responsible for setting the score that helped the tricolor team to extend an undefeated series against the opponent.

Since 2017, Corinthians have not beaten São Paulo at their rival’s home. The last alvinegro triumph there was on April 16 of that year, in the State semifinal, by 2 to 0. Since then, there have been nine games and now six wins by the home team and three draws.

Despite the defeat, Corinthians is in a calm situation in the competition, as it has already secured its spot in the quarterfinals. With 17 points, it leads Group A.

The squad led by Rogério Ceni reached the same 17 points, also leads the B group, but has not yet mathematically confirmed its classification for the knockout stage.

The duel started with a delay of about 10 minutes because of the heavy rain, with hail, that fell in the capital of São Paulo. There was even a power outage in the Morumbi region, which affected the operation of the stadium’s floodlights. When the ball has rolled, the lights take ten minutes to come back on.

With the lawn still quite wet, the hosts started the confrontation with pressure in the attack field, which resulted in a goal by Jonathan Calleri with just 52 seconds into the game.

The bid ended up drawing the scenario of the first half. While Corinthians had more possession of the ball and was hanging around Tiago Volpi’s area in search of a tie, São Paulo explored counterattacks.

More present at the front, the Corinthians had two great chances. In the first, Paulinho finished on the post, at eight minutes. And, in the second, Róger Guedes had a goal disallowed after completing a rebound in a bid in which Giuliano, in an offside position, headed the post.

The São Paulo defense, committed to the duel, managed to prevent other balls from reaching Volpi’s goal and the goalkeeper, back in the starting lineup replacing Jandrei – absent after testing positive for Covid-19 -, went to halftime without conceding a goal.

After the break, debutant Vítor Pereira waited another 15 minutes before making the first changes to the team. By then, São Paulo had already balanced the confrontation, while Corinthians had more difficulties to reach Volpi’s goal.

Even with the changes in the team, especially with the entries of Jô and Cantillo, the alvinegro team no longer maintained the same offensiveness of the initial stage, while the São Paulo managed to hold on to the victory.
