Two athletes dead in the World Triathlon Championship

Two athletes originally from Great Britain and the Mexico died on Thursday during the first day of the finals at World Triathlon Championship held in the Torremolinos region in southern Spain.

According to the organizers, two athletes died during the races, which included a 75-meter swim at Los Alamos Beach, a 20-kilometer bike ride and a 5-kilometer run along the beach.

Local media reported that the 57-year-old athlete from Britain, whose identity has not been released, suffered a cardiac arrest.

More than 5,500 athletes from 80 countries participate in the event, which takes place from October 17 to 20.

“It is with deep sadness that we inform you that two participants (one from Mexico and one from Great Britain) have lost their lives in the Triathlon World Championships taking place today, October 17th. Our deepest condolences to the families, friends, National Federations and the entire triathlon family. World Triathlon, the Spanish Federation and the LOC are in contact with the families and their National Federations to provide all the support needed in these difficult and sad times.”
