The refereeing decisions in their clash with Zalgiris for the 6th matchday of the Euroleague caused a storm of reactions in the ranks of Red Star, with the president of the Serbian club making an excuse for a “thieves’ championship”.
His comment on the matter was asked to be made by the coach of the Lithuanian team, Andrea Trinchieristressing that in every game there is someone who will have complaints and adding that he does not like to be the first issue of something that has nothing to do with the purely competitive part of the games.
What the Zalgiris coach said in detail:
“I don’t like these questions, because whatever I say will be misinterpreted. I don’t want to judge anyone. I saw a game between two teams that fought for victory until the last second. There were many contested phases, but the game went in that direction. Everyone does what they think is best for their team. I too have already been punished several times by the Euroleague for my statements.
I think our game against Red Star was very difficult for the referees. I don’t like it when something extra-competitive becomes the first issue. In the EuroLeague, in which the demands are so many, in every game someone has complaints. This creates problems throughout the system.
I coach my team, do my job and try to speak to the referees in the right way. Many times I disagree with their decisions, but that’s part of the game.”.
