Evening “performance” by Gionis, Sgouropoulos and Angelakis in the Polish League

by

Panagiotis Gionis and Yiannis Sgouropoulos were in opposing teams, while Konstantinos Angelakis competed in a postponed match of his own club in the Polish Table Tennis League.

In Mazowiecki, Gionis’ Bogoria welcomed Sgouropoulos’ Gliwice. In the home team’s 3-0 victory, the former European champions did not compete against each other, but gave everything in their unique and very difficult individual match. Angelakis powered Bialystok to victory away from home and stood out himself as he scored an impressive 3-2 set win against India’s Sathiyaan Gnanasekaran.

The match between Bogoria Grodzisk and Gliwice was for the eighth matchday of the League. The Polish champion was a favorite and confirmed it with a score of 3-0 sets. The top representatives of Greek table tennis were placed in the 1 position of their teams and would meet if the match reached the fourth individual match.

Gionis first defeated Wei Ye Chih from Taipei in 3-1 sets. He found himself back in the score and “turned around” the situation with difficulty. In the next match, Sgouropoulos faced the Polish Milos Regimski. He was down 3-0 in the set but pushed throughout the game. In the third set he led 9-7 and was unlucky with two “sori” (lucky points), while the third set was also “full”.

What Sgouropoulos and Regimski have in common is that they have won the European title twice in the Under 21 singles. Last year, the 18-year-old Pole was the first athlete in the ranking of the Polish League, while in the world ranking he is number 65.

Also, in the evening, Angelakis’ Bialystok faced Gdansk away from home in a match pending for the second matchday. The guests presented themselves on a very good day and, with the great assistance of Angelakis, prevailed with a 3-1 set. Today’s first Balkan champion in men’s singles achieved an excellent result with a 3-2 set against Sathyan Gnanasekaran, number 74 in the world ranking this week (6-3 ended the “against” set, which according to the rules from the Polish federation is not enough up to the 11th point for an athlete).

* Greece was represented at the refereeing level at the WTT Youth Contender in Slovakia, which ended in the city of Senek. The games were refereed by Efi Zaharopoulou from Athens.
